Welcome to Dubai… city of the future.
With this first and quick post, I would like to introduce to you the city of Dubai, starting with a little historical excursus and giving you an insight of the feelings that you’ll experience right upon your arrival.
To give you an idea of the peculiarity of this city and of the impressive speed that characterized its development, I’ll take you back to the 60s, when Dubai was just a small settlement by the sea, whose harbour was trading mainly pearls and goods from India.
The genius, who created Dubai as we know it today, was Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum (father of Sheikh Mohammed bi Rashid Al Maktoum, incumbent Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Dubai), utilized a loan obtained from the Emir of Kuwait to spur modern infrastructure development. Thus, a new harbour and and a modern airport were built, with the aim of achieving a lot more than the mere development of commercial activities.
Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed knew that the limited reserves of oil available in the Emirate were doomed to run off in the short-term, therefore with his future-oriented views, he realized his “VISION” of turning Dubai into a major hub with no equals in its region.
“VISION” is one of the most commonly used terms here in Dubai, because this city is the result of the “VISION” of extraordinary people who turned a pile of sand into a beautiful and wealthy metropolis, that is today a cosmopolitan commercial, financial and touristic hub.
MY VISION is also the title of an engaging book written by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, incumbent Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Dubai, which became a best-seller not only in the Arab region.
After this historical excursus, I’d like to give some suggestions to those among you who are deciding to plan their holidays in Dubai for the first time.
In order to be quick and avoid sounding boring to your hears, I firstly would like to focus on your arrival in Dubai to give you suggestions on how to face the city head on from the very first hours after your arrival.
I imagine that the majority of you will fly to Dubai via EMIRATES (one of the best airlines in the world), since this airline has already opened direct routes and connections to Italy. In fact, Emirates currently operates daily flights to Rome and Milan (3 flights per day each), to Venice and Bologna (1 flight per day each) and all of these flight will take you to Emirates Terminal 3 that is massive and beautiful.
Here, you’ll notice the first oddity- when you’ll exit the aircraft, on your way to the immigration desks, you’ll realize that only 5% of the passengers of your flight will follow the sign “immigration/baggage claim). The fact is that 95% of Emirates passengers will take connection flights to other more or less exotic destinations.
Differently from our Italian airports, as soon as you’ll get to the immigration desks, you’ll find an excellent organization and a wide number of operators ready to give you directions on how to reach the needed desk or the right area of the terminal. (I am telling you this, because even my mum, who doesn’t speak english – “hello” is maybe the only word that she’s familiar with -and had never taken a flight before, managed to exit the terminal easily.
The touristic visa for Italians is valid for 90 days, this means that you can stay here in Dubai and enjoy the sun for 3 months. No specific document are needed, just a passport valid for 6 months after your arrival.
After the immigration, you’ll get your luggage back and right before the exit to the arrival area you’ll have to pass through the custom. There is no need to worry about the custom, since no one will ask you to declare anything. Surely, you will not hear the typically Italian question: Are you importing any money or valuables? Here, there is no limit to the amount of money you can bring, differently the more money you bring with you, the happier they are 😉
You can carry with you alcohol (up to 4 liters) and pork products. Salami, hams, sausages that fill many of the bags entering Dubai, are among the most commonly smuggled products by the people coming to visit their relatives in Dubai.
There is only one thing that can really put you into severe troubles, I am talking about any type of drugs or illegal medications, that here in Dubai are considered no joke and might cost you life in prison or death penalty.
Out of the terminal, you’ll have two options to reach your nest/home in Dubai: you can use the metro, but since you’ll have plenty of luggage (even if you’ll be staying for 3 days) I’ll suggest you to hop on a cab.
Forget about the long queues and verbal fights that are necessary to find a cab in Italy. Here, at the airport there are thousands of cabs available to serve you on the spot. You’ll have 3 different types of cabs you can choose from: usual cabs, cabs for ladies only (driven by a woman) and limousine services that in comparison to other cabs are a bit more expensive.
For all those who travelled on Emirates First and Business class, the transportation to your hotel will be complimentary and provided by the airline.
All the other travelers will spend about 15 Euros to reach Downtown, 25 Euros to reach Dubai Marina, that is the most touristic area of the city, only 45 kms away from the airport and easy to reach thanks to the fast road infrastructures of the city.
The city planning is linearly developed following the coastline and we can define 3 main areas: Deira (the old city, the area where the airport is located, the Downtown (the new futuristic and cosmopolitan centre, which features the Burj Khalifa, (known as the tallest building in the world) and just 20 kms away Palm Jumeirah and Dubai Marina the touristic heart of the city, which is home for the majority of western expats living and working in Dubai- and I am one of them.
Dubai Marina features the best hotels and it is definitely the best area if you are coming here on holidays. World-class hotels directly on the beach, hundreds of restaurants, thousands of nationalities, foods, clubs, speciality bars, amazing beach clubs where you can enjoy your day between swimming pools and beaches and where you can sip cocktails at sunset time while you listen to music with a group of friends.
After all that I said, I guess you’ve understood that I am suggesting you to choose Dubai Marina or Palm Jumeirah for your next trip, especially to enjoy a few summer days and escape the grayness of Italian fall season.
Living in this city allows me to give you plenty of suggestions and information on how to discover all the pros and the beautiful sides of Dubai, enabling you to enjoy your holiday at its best.
In the upcoming outfit I’ll give you suggestions on which hotel to choose, depending on different requirements and budgets with the aim of helping you to enjoy every single day of your holiday in this mesmerizing and future-oriented Arabian pearl.
